2007-12-02 - 12:01 a.m. Had a pretty good Thanksgiving. All the folks in our expat group had a feed at the USO, turkey and all the fixin's. The pumpkin pie ala mode was exceptionally good. The food was all from the Army base, real American yams, peas, and so forth. We sat around and talked for a long time before migrating back to our respective homes. I have become very fond of the Korean sweet potatoes. They have red skins and are yellowish inside. Honda brought some baked ones to class Tuesday and insisted that I take the leftovers home. They are really tasty, just gently sweet, eaten plain, no salt or butter,- one of my favorite snacks. Last night, I interviewed a couple who want to take English classes. They took me to a ttok-kalbi place for supper. I haven't had this kind of stir-fried chicken in a long time. It's cooked with shredded cabbage, onions and garlic, as well as red pepper sauce. The side dishes are lettuce, garlic, kim chi, yellow radish pickles, and cole slaw. Each diner also gets a bowl of miokguk (a flat green seaweed in a clear broth). The lettuce and seaweed help to reduce the effect of the red pepper sauce called gotchujang. If I'm not careful about using the "modifiers," the pepper sauce will get me. We had a good time, but I can see these folks are going to need a lot of work before they are ready to function in America. I really had to talk slowly and use simple words for them to understand me. They are leaving in three months! Happy Trails!
