2003-06-19 - 7:32 p.m. June 7, 2003 (Lou's birthday) I'm headed home after the USO meeting and a couple of hours with Ann afterward. She wanted to treat me to supper. She says that she remembered that I treated her when she was broke. I like Ann, but she has a couple strikes against her: she's very self-absorbed and has some grandiose delusions (the latest being that the President is trying to call her, but his security forces are interfering). The fact that a guard wouldn't let her enter the Blue House proves it, to her mind. Oh well, we had a good time for the first hour and a half. She's got work anyway,- one of those free-form jobs where they tell you that the sky's the limit if you work hard. Sounds like she's working on commission. And, she's gotten out of her mom's house. That's very good! ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I've got a job subbing for a friend July 7 to ll. Hope it doesn't interfere with my charity place work. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ June 14 (on the way home from Nolan's) Today's been cloudy. We had a shower in the morning and the air was thick all day. I ventured out for errands once, then went to meet Jim, who was laden with a suitcase and blender that he wanted to give me. I'd planned to go to Carol's at 5 p.m., but cancelled after the suitcase run. I was too tired, so laid down instead. Did make it to the 6:30 meeting. Afterward, I was invited to Nolan's where ALOHA, my home group, was going to do an inventory. Forst of all, though, Nolan fed us royally on t-bone steak (grilled by Cookie) and cold fried chicken, salads of all sorts, breads, iced teas, and watermelon for dessert. I think we'll do it again. My sense is that Nolan is a lonely guy who loves to socialize. The group decided to move on outreach to Corean groups and see if we can trade speakers back and forth. Sounds like a good plan. We have enough bilingual members to translate. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ June 19 Hollyhocks are blooming,- a month earlier than they do in Maine. They've always symbolised that my birthday is "just around the corner." Jim and I went to Cho Hung to open a joint account yesterday, but couldn't. The bank employees walked out on strike because the government is selling its shares to another bank (privatising). We had a nice visit anyway. Went down to a grill and had marinated chicken and beef with loads of lettuce and other veggies. Then, we went over to his favorite coffee shop and had a "Double Espresso Mocha." Delicious! I had done a lot of walking the day before and earlier in the day, so my hips were complaining loudly. My left knee took its opportunity to swell up, to boot. Soon's I got home, I mixed up a packet of gelatin and took it. My hips are fine today, but the knee is still being obstreperous. Despite that, I sallied forth to do errands down around the Rotary. The big thing was to get enough cash to take care of essential bills in case the bank strike drags on. I hit Hanabank at the Rotary, paid the landline telephone and withdrew 40 manwon to cover the rent, etc., from Cho Hung at their(Hana's) ATM. From Hanabank's front step, I could see DahnWorld's sign, so I headed there next to see what they could tell me about Pete. His phone and email don't work, and we are all worried about him. The head man on duty there made a phone call and got me a number to call at 6 p.m. By then, they think they'll have tracked him down and can give me contact info. {Later note: They did!} From the crosswalk in front of DahnWorld, I spotted a KTF sign, so I trotted over there. Saw some guys painting the crosswalk stripes on the way; they look like university graduates. There aren't enough jobs for college graduates, so Korea exports they the way we do in Maine. After tending to my cellphone bill, I've been just walking around, window-shopping. Stopped at an attractive place offering toasted mandu and julienned veggies for 3,000 won. They served kimchi, radish pickles and soup with it,- a real bargain. Now, I'm heading back up toward Koday to see if I can find some bananas and coffee to reduce the swelling in this knee. ~~~~~~~~~~~~End of transcription~~~~~~~~~~~~ I came into WAWA! PC bang to check e-mail, and here I am, three hours later! Need to wrap this up before the banana man closes up for the evening. I need to sent Pete's phone number to Doe and Jim, also. Another three hours or so and we can give him a ring, given the time difference between here and California. Thanks for reading. Happy Trails! ~ Sil in Corea
