2003-06-13 - 9:56 p.m. Late update: June 13,'03 Just got a call from Sally at "Gina's" (the private school where I was filling in). She wants me to come in Monday and Tuesday afternoons to work with the new teacher, saying "She needs to learn about tine management." So much for them thinking that the poor gal could just be tossed into the classroom with no tutoring. (She's never taught children before.) What she needs is to learn a whole bag of tricks to keep the kids busy and interested. Teaching kids "cold turkey" is like asking someone to just walk on stage and perform a juggling act with no preparation. I'll tell her about props and games to warm them up, but she's got to enlist the help of the staff in backing up her discipline. Can't be letting the little people play their disruptive tricks. Learn names fast and nail them with "trips to the principal." And don't let Sally schedule her for more than 2 classes in a row, until she's got her feet under her. And now, here's some notes from the notebook: April 28 It's been quite a while since I did more than jot an occasional "factoid" in here. I got out early tonight, only scheduled to teach 2 classes at "Gina's." Had my regular morning classes, 1 1/2 hours with only two moms today, then the preschoolers. I'm doing the 5-year-olds for 15 minutes, and we've split the 6- and 7-year-olds into two classes. I try to jam as much interaction as possible into 15 minutes with each group.
