2003-04-28 - 1:29 p.m. The latest on SARS ~~~ from the Korea Herald, Apr. 28 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 12 patients may carry SARS
Health authorities said yesterday two men including a Japanese national who entered the country last Saturday after a trip to Beijing were added to a list of suspected patients of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), bringing the total number of potential cases here to 12. The second man, a Korean in his 40s, returned home from a trip to southeast China the same day as the arrival of the Japanese man, said officials at the National Institute of Health (NIH). The Japanese traveler in his 40s had his temperature taken after reporting to quarantine officers at Incheon International Airport with a cough and was subsequently hospitalized for tests. NIH officials said precise medical checks will be made on the two new suspected SARS patients to see whether their cases included pneumonia, one of the tell-tale symptoms of the respiratory illness. Health officials have been on a heightened state of alert in preparation for an influx this week of more than 10,000 Korean students who are expected to leave Beijing and other Chinese cities to escape the disease. The NIH said 28 military medical staff were assigned to Incheon airport late last week, increasing the number of quarantine officials there to 36. With the quarantine staff reinforced, up to 5,000 entrants can be checked for SARS symptoms, NIH officials said. The Seoul Metropolitan Government said it will distribute 250,000 pamphlets on measures to guard against the disease to citizens at the 25 ward offices in the capital city. The city government withdrew a plan last Friday to designate a hospital exclusively for suspected SARS patients after facing strong objections from local residents who live near the candidate clinic. About 500 residents blocked the main road leading to the hospital and some of them staged an overnight protest at the hospital. The city caved in and withdrew its plan to use the hospital for SARS treatment. http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2003/04/28/200304280052.asp ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Doesn't that last NIMBY bit sound like home? Sure sounds like my native locale. That's just how folks would behave if they had a hospital there at which to protest. The public consensus here is that the government is taking all necessary precautions. There are only the normal amount of face masks being worn. (It's customary here for those with colds or weak immune systems to wear face masks.) It must be pretty safe; the eighty-year-old mime, Marcel Marceau, came to Seoul to perform this last weekend. I'm sure his manager would not have endangered the health of the goose that lays his "golden eggs." Hot off the wire, straight to you. Happy Trails! ~ Sil in Corea
