2003-01-12 - 9:45 p.m. Off-the-Cuff, on-line entry: January 12, 2003 Last night, I went to Dongdaemun Market and found a phone store, not without mishap. I caught my foot in a sidewalk crack and fell on my hip, the one Dr. White called his "work of art." I'm a little stiff and limp-y, but on the mend. Just bruised the joint, I think. At any rate, I'm the proud owner of a teal-and-grey telephone which will be hooked up to the Korean version of Ma Bell on Monday. I got a couple snacks for supper, an egg in a pancake and, later, a barbequed chicken-on-a-stick (kabab). I've been eating lots of veggies and noodles lately, so the protein went down well (and provided some "repair materials" for my tumble). Today, Cho and I went shopping for textbooks for our new classes, boys in primary school and girls in middle school. I think we've gotten some good books. The texts are strong on phonics and listening/speaking skills. The workbooks emphasize penmanship as well as vocabulary and creative skills. I got a bit passionate about having to spend money I don't have to renew my tourist visa. It surprised Cho. I'd told him about my having to renew my visa every 90 days, the last time I made the run in October. That's why I came up with the "contract proposal" that I showed him back then. He hadn't really understood what an expense and inconvenience it was for me, however. He got it 'in spades' this time! (He told me that, in October, he had thought I was "just being a tourist, going for fun.") This time, I asked for an advance on my salary, and dwelt on the frustration of always being short of cash. He was able to loan me most of it, and I'll have to call on other doners to raise the rest. I've really lost my paper journal this time; had it in my backpack and somehow I lost the whole shootin'match. I'll put up more later this week, but figured an update was in order. Happy Trails! and thanks for reading. ~ Sil in Corea
